Learning Communities

Who We Are

We opened our doors in 2018 to K-2nd grade students in the Milpitas community. By 2024, we will have almost 800 TK-6th grade students enrolled.  We have created a Learning Community School that:

  • Integrates digital content allowing for differentiated path and  pace
  • Targets instruction allowing for small group instruction aligned to specific
student needs and learning goals

  • Provides student ownership of learning promoting
investment and agency
  • Makes data-informed decisions that drive the instructional program which allows adjustments in pacing, method of delivery, student groupings

What We Value

At Mattos, we strive for excellence and develop our young people to become all they aspire to be. Completed puzzle creating a circle; each piece with an element of a Portrait of a GraduateWe do this with a caring community of staff, students, and parents who work together to create academically and emotionally nurturing environments supporting the various modalities of learning. Students reach proficiencies in core content standards as well as learning and innovation skills to become creative, innovative, self-directed learners to apply skills with the moral imperative of social responsibility to better humanity.

We believe that by inspiring the practice of virtues while developing graduate competencies, students will live meaningful lives beyond school and commit acts of service and generosity in whatever fields they choose to endeavor.  Our learning communities are named after virtues including Gentleness, Unity, Perseverance, Compassion, Reliability, Peacefulness, Honesty, Respect, Confidence, Kindness, Generosity, Flexibility, Understanding, Thankfulness, Courage, Enthusiasm, Friendliness, Determination, Creativity, Joyfulness, Integrity and Humility.

Our Learning Community Philosophy

Diagram showing how the levels of Bloom's Taxonomy translates into classroom designWe believe that all students learn in diverse ways and will need to operate in different ways throughout their lifetime. In order to prepare our scholars to meet those needs, our learning community model includes performance-based learning, team collaboration, small groups, 1:1 learning, and online learning. This looks like:

  • Learning Communities with approximately 100 students and 3-4 teachers

  • A teaching team and students assigned to each learning community

  • Teacher collaboration that supports students in the entire community with collective responsibility for every student’s success

  • Flexible physical space and furniture to provide choice for students to learn in their preferred modality and provide opportunities for movement
